El’s Army Grows

Remember El’s Army, the winning cultivar selected by patients at our Cannaversary celebration? Our staff recently harvested this new flower, and we are excited to share it with you. Assuming all goes well with independent lab testing, it will be arriving on dispensary shelves soon!

But before you try the new flower, we want to finish telling you the story of these plants. As we reported previously, our growers planted four El’s Army seeds on August 24. The seedlings were up-potted on September 9, and each plant was labeled with a unique barcode for tracking purposes.

Unfortunately, as we mentioned in our first El’s Army blog, “much can go wrong during the growing process.” While three of our young soldiers appeared to be healthy females, plant #3 began showing signs of intersex traits. When this happens, we immediately remove the plant from production.

Propagation Day

You might wonder how three little plants are supposed to produce enough cannabis to supply patients. The answer is “propagation.” On October 17, our staff took approximately 18 cuttings from each of the three plants. If all goes well, each cutting is expected to develop into a mature, flowering beauty! From this point forward, the original three plants will be known as “mothers.”

Preparation is key to successful propagation. A few weeks before we propagate a plant, the mother plant will be “topped” or “tipped” to encourage lateral branching. This increases the number of cuts that will be available. The practice is as simple as removing a top portion of the plant’s tallest stalk, known as the “leader.” Removing the leader causes plant hormones to be redistributed to lower portions of the plant, promoting new leaders to take the old leader’s place.

For each cutting, we carefully remove a branch and immediately place it into a cup with water. The cutting is then carefully trimmed to facilitate growth and placed into a pre-soaked “propagation plug,” where it can begin to take root and form a new plant.

photo of seedling and propagation plug
El’s Army cutting in a propagation plug

To keep track of each new soldier, we place them on a tray and label each phenotype. Labels include the date of the cuttings and the initials of the employees who took them. The cuts are still very sensitive at this stage, so we spray a dome with water and place it over the tray for the first night or two to keep them moist. On average, roots will start to poke out of their plugs one week after propagation. These cuts will live happily in our “Mom Room” until they are ready to be transplanted and moved into the vegetative phase.

Now that each mother plant has produced offspring that are genetically identical to the mother, we have created three different “phenotypes.” At this point, you can already see clear differences emerging between the cuttings from El’s Army #1, #2, and #4.

photo of cuttings, some much taller than others
Does El’s Army have a minimum height requirement? Asking for phenotype #2.

So what happens to the mother plants? We keep them alive and happy while we wait to see what happens with their offspring! If one or more of these phenotypes produces amazing cannabis flower, we will surely want to propagate more cuttings from that mother in the future.

Next: Transplant Day and the Vegetative Stage

Meet the Winner!

At our Cannaversary event, we asked patients to vote on which new strain (a.k.a. “cultivar”) we should grow next. The winner was a sativa called “El’s Army,” and we are pleased to report that it is making good progress!

photo of voting at Cannaversary
After tallying the votes, we declared “El’s Army” the winner and planted these four seeds.

El’s Army, bred by Dynasty Genetics/Professor P, is a cross of two highly regarded sativas: Moose and Lobsta x Super Silver Haze.

Moose and Lobsta has emerged as a popular sativa-dominant hybrid in New England. It is known for its fruity, skunky smell and overtones of diesel fuel. Super Silver Haze is an award-winning sativa prized for its energizing, uplifting effects. We can never be sure what to expect when we plant a new cultivar, but we are optimistic that El’s Army will be a great addition to our menus!

Like proud parents, our growers have been taking photos of El’s Army at every stage of its development. We look forward to showing you each step in the process as El’s Army grows. Here’s an adorable shot of one of our tiny sprouts wearing the shell of its seed like a hat:

This little “soldier” seems excited to join El’s Army!

The four seeds we planted quickly developed into four happy-looking seedlings. We fed them a steady diet of water, light, and nutrients and continued taking photos.

photo of 4 seedlings

In the third week, we potted each seedling in its own bucket labeled with the date and a barcode. This label is required by N.H. law, and it will allow us to track each plant from seedling to sale.

photo of 4 larger seedlings
Now that these seedlings have been potted, the ceiling is the limit!

So What’s Next for the Winner?

We planted these seeds on August 24 and potted them on September 9, but that was only the beginning of a long process. If all goes well, we expect these plants will be ready to harvest by late January. After harvest, they will need to be shucked, cured, trimmed, and submitted for independent lab testing before the flower can be packaged and sent to the dispensaries. In other words, El’s Army won’t be built in a day!

Ultimately, many cultivars show promise but only a few will exceed expectations. Even within the same cultivar, we can expect that each female plant may develop its own unique flavors, aromas, effects, and appearance. And since much can go wrong during the growing process, this makes it even more satisfying when things go exactly right.

We are excited to share the progress of this promising new cultivar, and we look forward to providing future updates!

New Sativas Available!

For patients who have asked for more sativa flower options, we are pleased to announce that we have added two new sativas to our menus. These tall, rangy plants take longer to grow than their shorter indica or hybrid counterparts, but they can be worth the extra time and effort. Our only concern is that if we keep growing plants this tall, we might need to hire some extra tall staff members to care for them!

photo of Prime staff member being dwarfed by tall sativa plants
Klaus Poltilla, Prime’s director of operations, is not a short person – the plants behind him are just very tall!

The plants in the background above are a classic sativa cross: Panama x Colombian Gold. As the colas continued to expand, the stalks could barely support them, even with assistance.

Meet the New Flowers!

In addition to Panama x Colombian Gold, we are pleased to introduce another classic sativa cross: Golden Thai. This flower is available in 3.5g and 1g sizes and in single pre-rolls.

The Panama x Colombian Gold came out looking good as well. However, since the buds were not as consistent as we might have liked, we decided to trim them and process them into pre-rolls.

In addition to these new sativas, we’ve also added a new hybrid flower called “Margolope.” We don’t quite know what to think of it yet, but it has an interesting smell and we believe it is worth a try!

As you can probably tell, we are very excited about the new flowers. And these are not the last new flowers we will be rolling out in 2021! Patients, we will be sure to tell you about new flower options when they arrive at the dispensaries. We look forward to hearing which ones you like best!

Spooky New Flower for October!

Prime ATC introduces “Ghouls N Ghosts,” a promising new flower strain with a fun, Halloween-friendly name.

Don’t be afraid – it’s only cannabis!

Prime’s growers are freakishly excited to unveil this spooky new strain of flower for the month of October. Ghouls N Ghosts is an indica-dominant hybrid cross of Ghost OG and SinMint Cookies. Like the Orange Mojito flower we released last week, it was bred by SinCity Seeds. We couldn’t resist having a little bit of Halloween-inspired fun with this photo!

We promise that there will not actually be any bats, spider webs, jack-o-lanterns, or ghosts in the flower we are selling at our dispensaries. But there will definitely be a lot of reddish-orange hairs. Take a look at these hand-trimmed buds!

Perhaps this strain should be called “Scary Harry,” instead? We’re not sure, but if you’d like to try it for yourself, you can find it here on our online menu.

As always, we look forward to hearing any feedback we receive from patients!

Two New Flower Strains!

Orange Mojito and Apex are now available in both Merrimack and Chichester!

If you’ve glanced at Prime’s menu this week, you may have noticed two new flower strains: Orange Mojito and Apex. These have both been added to our gold tier on an introductory basis, and we think patients are going to like them!

Orange Mojito

For fans of actual mojitos, this might seem like an odd name. Mojitos are made with mint and limes, not oranges! But when you smell this Orange Mojito flower, the name makes total sense. This hybrid leans slightly sativa (55/45), and it is a cross between Orange Cookies and SinMint Cookies bred by SinCity Seeds.

Patients who have been with Prime for a few years may remember a strain called Tangerine Haze. The aroma of Orange Mojito is somewhat similar: fruity and a little bit minty, like the name suggests. We hope patients will find this strain beneficial, and we look forward to hearing feedback on its effects!

Apex

This new strain is also a hybrid (50/50), and it also produced some great-looking flower. Bred by ETHOS Genetics, Apex is a cross of Mandarin Cookies and Lilac Diesel Bx3.
